WINTER HAIR TIPS FOR 2021

If there ever was a year where I've been counting down the minutes to spring then it's 2021. The year that was 2020 is behind us in the rearview mirror, we're trynna get away from it like a speed racer & there's a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

But first we have to get through winter.

For a lot of us we threw in the towel on many things in 2020... our appearance included. I have never heard of more people wearing yoga pants & messy buns in all my life. But if we want to come out of hibernation this spring looking & feeling our best then it's time to start taking care of our hair a little.

So we've concluded most of us have not been keeping up with our hair care & then on top of that is all the drama that winter can bring to our coiffe. Winter weather can cause straw like strands, dry & itchy scalp, & static, just to name a few - & we haven't even mentioned the matting that comes from scarves & turtlenecks or the dreaded hat head!

But no worries I'm here to help! Here are my top 10 tips to save your hair this winter... & even more importantly this pre-work will help us to come out of hibernation looking our best!

KEEP HAIR WASHING TO A MINIMUM & WHEN YOU DO USE A GOOD CONDITIONER

This is always a good rule of thumb but especially in the winter months. Most of us have such dry hair in the winter we can get away with less washings... & to be honest what are most of us doing anyway?!

WHEN WASHING YOUR HAIR TRY NOT TO USE HOT SCALDING WATER

Use lukewarm or better yet cool or cold hair when rinsing. It's an excellent way to add a little of that missing shine into your hair.

USE A LEAVE IN CONDITIONER

This may not be a part of your regular hair upkeep but is probably a good idea to get your hair through the first quarter of 2021.

TREAT YOUR HAIR ONCE A WEEK TO A MASK OR DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENT

Even after using a good conditioner & a leave in it still might be a good idea to weekly, biweekly or even once a month give your hair a little extra in the winter months.

TRIM REGULARLY TO KEEP YOUR HAIR STRONG & HEALTHY

Hopefully by now you have found a salon you feel comfortable visiting or a concierge stylist like myself to pay you a visit... it's honestly not healthy for your hair to not at least trim it in over a year. I understand if you can't but if you could its certainly a good idea.

NEVER GO OUTSIDE WITH WET HAIR IN THE WINTER

Never go outside with sopping wet hair in frigid temps. If your hair freezes it becomes less pliable & certainly more vulnerable to breakage.

WRAP HAIR IN SILK SCARF

Silk retains moisture which is perfect if you have drier or more brittle hair. Even if you don't it's a good tip to try if the dry winter conditions are giving your normally silky hair a dried out texture.

SLEAP ON SILK PILLOWCASE

The silk is more hydrating & less rough on your hair than cotton is... adding more moisture & causing less breakage.

USE A HUMIDIFIER

Sleep with a humidifier in your room... your hair & skin will thank you for it later once you put some moisture back in the air in the harsh winter months.

DRINK YOUR WATER

In case you couldn't tell yet hydration is key in the winter months. Drink as much water as you can to keep your hair & skin as naturally moisturized as possible.

So there you have it... follow all or some of these rules for winter hair care & you should be coming out of hibernation this spring feeling hydrated & looking beautiful!

Hope you had a wonderful holiday season & cheers to an amazing 2021!

Hal
